Rangers Damian Garcia hopes not to be lost as £3.1million transfer claim comes after a Mexican handshake

Those Rangers links with Peñarol midfielder Damian Garcia always had an air of ambition attached to them.

That’s even if the 20-year-old Uruguayan defensive midfielder certainly fits into Nils Koppen & co’s Rangers summer rebuild blueprint.

Rangers are looking for young talents who are ready to take the next step in their playing career.

The hope is that they can win big at Ibrox and then make the club a player trading transfer fortune.

As a result, Brazilian left back Jefte has been signed from Fluminense, Colombian winger Oscar Cortes from RC Lens and French central defender Clinton Nsiala from AC Milan.

And while the hard work continues as Rangers look to bring more players to the club, reports in Uruguay have provided a more definitive update on the future of Damian Garcia.

Rangers links to Damian Garcia first emerged via reports in South America in early June.

The Uruguay U20 World Cup winner is out of contract in December and as Rangers scour the South American markets, the links looked promising.

These were then reinforced by the confirmation that Peñarol president Nacho Ruglio was present at the TransferRoom summit in Cancun together with Rangers director Nils Koppen.

Throw in Heart & Hand claiming that Rangers are keen to do a deal and suddenly the excitement started to build.

But all along, the player’s agent – a gentleman named Edgardo Lasalvia – had suggested that the player first sign a new contract in Uruguay.

This is to ensure that Peñarol receives a fair price for developing Garcia at the club.

“We talked and I think we will reach an agreement,” Lasalvia said, as quoted by local publication Montevideo.

“They, especially (vice-president Eduardo) Zaidensztat, are resting because they know that I am not going to sign a free agent from the club.

“I’m going to renew it and we’ll go through the big door.

“Let people rest assured because the players of the TMA team (their representative agency) are not leaving through the back door, bypassing the leaders. The leaders pass and Peñarol belongs to the people.”

Now the latest reports from South America have suggested that a new Damian Garcia contract is close to being agreed.

Gers could achieve a lower price transfer

Earlier this week, journalist Dario Alberti claimed Damian Garcia was on the verge of agreeing a new contract and substantial pay rise with Peñarol.

The Uruguay-based DSports journalist also claimed that details of a new contract were revealed at the TransferRoom summit in Mexico.

It is claimed that Garcia will sign a new two-year contract with Peñarol, but it is believed that the midfielder will also have a $10 million (£7.9 million) release clause included in the deal.

But to add an extra dimension to the claims, a report in El Observador suggests that the player could leave Uruguay for less than half this amount.

Referring to comments from player agent Edgardo Lasalvia on Damian Garcia’s value, it is believed that a transfer fee of around $4 million could be enough to sign the midfielder.

This would include a 20% resale fee, which protects Peñarol’s interests in the event of a future sale.

That’s certainly a more palatable sum in a Rangers context and with Peñarol convinced a departure won’t happen until the end of the Uruguayan season in December, this remains a situation to keep an eye on.

It was always likely that Damian Garcia would sign a deal with Peñarol this month to protect the club’s financial and playing interests.

While any idea that Rangers could strike this summer has always been ambitious, the winter window could be a completely different story.
